How to calculate fuel for a journey
Multiply the distance by the car’s average fuel consumption, then divide by 100. A 180 km journey at 6.8 l/100 km needs 12.24 litres of fuel each way.
The estimate uses the average consumption you enter. Traffic, weather, speed and luggage can make the actual result different.
One way or return
Choose a single journey or a return trip. For a return trip, the calculator doubles the entered distance before working out fuel and cost.
If the return route is longer or has very different conditions, calculate the two legs separately instead.
Add parking and tolls to see the real trip cost
Fuel is not always the largest expense. Motorway charges, ferries, congestion fees and parking can change the total substantially, so add them before comparing travel options.
Both extra-cost fields are optional. Leave them empty when only the fuel estimate matters.
Split the total fairly
Enter the number of people sharing the expense to divide the complete total equally. The amount per person includes fuel, parking and tolls, not just the fill-up.
This calculator plans one trip and does not save the values. Record the actual fill-ups and expenses in FuelUp if you want to compare the estimate with what the journey really cost.
